This fascinating chart details the specific distribution of sperm and right whales throughout the world. The creator, Lieutenant M.F. Maury (1806–1873), used the log books from hundreds of whalers over many years to create a map that not only describes the location of whales by species but also the probability of finding whales given the time of year. Maury conceived of the Whale Chart in the 1840s to aid the whaling community.
