About

This print provides a sweeping view of the ebb and flow of great players who have played on the PGA Tour since its inception in 1916. It includes fifty-seven players who have each won at least fifteen PGA Tour events (including majors).

The graphic is divided vertically into six eras representing the eleven players who are considered dominant based on their tour and majors records. They include:

  • 1916-1935: Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen
  • 1936-1955: Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson
  • 1956-1976: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper and Gary Player
  • 1977-1984: Tom Watson
  • 1985-1995: No dominant player(s)
  • 1996-2004: Tiger Woods
The main section of the graphic tracks the rise and decline of the fifty-seven players with colored streams that flow from left to right. Dominant players for each era are represented by thick colored streams. The other forty-six great players, grouped according to overlapping victory records, are represented by narrow tan streams. To include all fifty-seven players and provide comparison between the dominant and other great players for each era, they are grouped rather than shown individually.

The print also includes detailed winning data by year for the majors, best scoring average and money winner.
